About

The Hull Swahili Diaspora (HSD) was initiated in the spirit of Ubuntu, taking the Africanfamily as a model for a broader kinship system. Ubuntu addresses interconnectedness among people, our common humanity, and our responsibility to each other. HSD was founded by members of the main Swahili-speaking countries following the arrival of refugees from Congo, Somalia, and Burundi.

In alignment with our Ubuntu philosophy, our aim is to bring communities together to collectively tackle social issues. Even before the formal establishment of our group, we organised community gatherings to unite various groups. Our motto is ‘I am because we are’.
